General description:

To develop models of natural Mycobacterium tuberculosis transmission, define key transmission properties, and develop new approaches to vaccination that will protect against infection. Funding: this competition is expected to fund several grants for an aggregate total cost of $20 million over 3 years. This RFA seeks to identify projects that will help meet one or both of the following two interrelated goals:
1. To develop novel approaches to vaccination against Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), with particular focus on approaches that aim to induce protection against infection with Mtb;
2. To develop models of natural Mtb transmission and/or methods for defining the relevant molecular and biological characteristics of naturally transmitted mycobacteria and the interactions of such with vertebrate hosts.
