The Volkswagen Foundation is a non-profit-making foundation established under private law based in Hannover. Its objective is to support science, the humanities and technology in research and university teaching. Under the terms of its statutes it may support any field of science, but in practice it concentrates on funding initiatives that it develops itself. The funding initiatives are grouped into four areas: "Support of Persons and New Structures", "International Focus", "Thematic Impetus" and "Social and Cultural Challenges". In exceptional cases, the Foundation also supports projects outside these areas.
