The non-profit NCL Foundation was founded on August 7th 2002 by Dr. Frank Husemann after his son Tim was diagnosed with NCL at the age of six. The abbreviation NCL stands for the mission of the foundation – National Contest for Life – as well as for the rare children’s disease (Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis / Batten Disease). Every year about 15 to 20 children develop NCL in Germany. The NCL Foundation’s aim is to fight this deadly disease with targeted research. Alongside research initiation and funding, the Foundation’s work is predominantly aimed at educating relevant medical groups, affected parents, and the public.
