The Carl Zeiss Foundation with its two foundation companies Schott Glaswerke and Carl Zeiss established the Ernst Abbe Fund named after its benefactor in 1989. The proceeds from the wealth of the foundation flow into two separate research awards that each have a value of EUR 25,000 and have been awarded on an alternating basis each year since 1990 as the “Carl Zeiss Research Award” and the “Otto Schott Research Award” to motivate and promote mainly young scientists.

Both research awards are governed by the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft and presented on an international basis. For this reason, the list of distinguished award winners includes the names of researchers from the U.S.A., Russia, Japan, China and other European countries, as well as physicists and chemists from Germany.
